Pilates Breath: Finding Strength Through Mindful Movement in Albuquerque
If you ask any of our Pilates instructors here in Albuquerque what the most important part of Pilates is, they’ll tell you it’s breathing. True strength doesn’t come from pushing harder but from finding the right balance between effort and release. Whether you’re new to Pilates or building on your practice, mindful breathing helps you reconnect with your body’s natural rhythm and move with more ease.
The Power of Breathing
Breath is the quiet engine behind every Pilates exercise. It organizes movement, fuels muscles, and helps your mind stay present. Unlike the deep belly breathing used in yoga, Pilates focuses on lateral breathing, expanding the ribs wide to the sides and back. This creates space in the torso while keeping gentle engagement in the core. That connection transforms effort into flow, turning each exercise into a moving meditation.
Relaxation as a Hidden Strength
Relaxation in Pilates isn’t about giving up. It’s about letting go of what doesn’t serve your movement. For many recovering from injury or managing pain, breath becomes a safe path back to strength. Each inhale tells the body it’s safe to move and each exhale releases tension that has been guarding or protecting. In most of our private sessions here in our Pilates studio in Albuquerque, we see this transformation every day. When your muscles stop gripping so tightly, everything starts to work together again. Your joints move more freely, your body relaxes, and that’s when real strength starts to come back.
Here’s what one of our students shared:
“I have disk degeneration in my back and chronic hip pain. Never in a million years would I have thought I could move the way I do now. I feel exceptionally cared for by Meredith, Yarrow, Maureen, and Frances. I feel stronger and more capable than I have in years. Somos has made my life better.”

Integrating Breath, Stretch, and Awareness
Breath, stretch, and awareness are inseparable in Pilates. Each deepens the other. During a stretch, every exhale becomes an invitation to lengthen, not by forcing, but by softening into space.
Try this short sequence before your next class:
Sit tall or lie comfortably. Close your eyes.
Inhale through your nose, letting the back of your ribs, sides of ribs widen.
Exhale through your mouth, feeling your shoulders melt and your spine lengthen feeling your abdominal draw towards the back of your spine and up.
Add gentle side stretches or roll-downs, moving in rhythm with your breath.
Notice if you’re holding your jaw or shoulders, and allow them to soften. In our group Pilates classes, we begin each session with mindful breathing just like this to help everyone settle in, connect, and move with greater awareness.
The Quiet Strength Within
The Pilates breath teaches us that calm and control can exist together. Every inhale grounds you and every exhale releases what’s no longer needed. Over time, you build not only stronger muscles but a steadier sense of self. At Somos Pilates, we believe that movement should feel empowering, not intimidating. Come experience Pilates in Albuquerque, where breath, movement, and community come together to help you find your quiet strength within.
